Crossroads sit where paths intersect. Across cultures they mark liminal ground: in Greek tradition Hermes and Hecate guard the three-way and four-way split; in West African and Afro-Caribbean lineages (Èṣù/Legba, Papa Legba) the crossroads belongs to the opener of the way; European folk magic treats it as a place to leave offerings; American blues folds it into the myth of bargaining for talent. The common thread is that in certain places at certain times, realms meet, and traversing them becomes possible.

The symbol of a crossroad is incredibly ancient. A plus or x can be seen throughout ancient symbolism. It represents the 4 elements and the joining within them. The elements aren’t separate from one another. They are different modalities of the same medium: aether. The cross is the point of transmutation, where elements converge back towards Zeru.

The alchemy symbol for Earth is a circle with a plus inside it. Netism states that Earth is at a nexus point in the Net where multiple realms converge. This means that Earth has more planes stacked together than most planets, and this is a large contributor to the number of strange sightings reported here. It’s not uncommon for a dimensional plane that’s not supposed to be visible to us to briefly snap into view. This is the inspiration for Khnum’s Law, as described by the sage in The Young Man and the Sage.

Nearly every culture has stories of dimensional cross-overs, portals to alternate realms, or circumstances where strange creatures temporarily passed through. What if they weren’t just stories?

What do cross-roads symbolize for you?
