On April 13, 2029, asteroid 99942 Apophis will skim past Earth at roughly 20,000 miles (about 32,000 km) from the surface—closer than many geostationary satellites. It will likely be visible to the naked eye across parts of the Eastern Hemisphere. This is the closest approach of a known asteroid of this size in recorded history, and it will be safe.

What happens next matters. Earth’s gravity will tug on Apophis, changing its orbit, spin, and possibly shuffling its surface. That tug also means astronomers will update its trajectory after the flyby. Today, with radar and years of tracking, NASA has ruled out any Apophis impact for at least the next century. Still, the 2029 encounter will alter its path, which is why scientists will measure the changes carefully.

We will watch up close. NASA has redirected the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, now OSIRIS-APEX, to rendezvous with Apophis just after the flyby to study how Earth’s pull reshapes it. ESA is preparing its Ramses mission to join the observing campaign. The goal is to learn how near-Earth asteroids behave so we can better predict, and if ever needed, deflect.
