In traditional astrology the Moon and Sun are co-equal luminaries, “king and queen”, rather than a Sun-only focus. Ancient astrologers gave the Moon as much interpretive weight as the Sun and taught that which one leads depends on whether you were born by day or by night (the doctrine of sect). In day charts the Sun is the “sect light”; in night charts the Moon takes command. Practically, that means people born at night often find their Moon sign and Moon’s house describe them more strongly than their Sun sign, with emotions and bodily rhythms showing up more vividly.

Traditional sources also tie the Moon to the physical body and incarnation itself. It’s the closest sphere to Earth in the old cosmology, and even modern observations give us something tangible: the Moon visibly rules tides and many natural cycles, so it’s not a stretch to see why astrologers took it as the body’s ruler and mood-maker.

The Moon is the last sphere the soul traverses before taking on a body, which is why it’s so closely tied to embodiment, the maternal principle, and our first experiences of life on Earth. Both ancient and modern sources link the Moon with the past through ancestry, early conditioning, and memories (even very early or prenatal), so it naturally speaks to attachment patterns and how we seek safety and care. It also carries our family and ancestral imprints, which is why lunar symbolism so often overlaps with “Mother,” home, and roots.

In the Netism Energy Center model, the Moon is linked to the Reproductive Energy Center (correlates to the Sacral Chakra). It is our physical seed as well as our emotions, relationships, and dreams. It is governed by Water, a passive, reflective carrier.

I was born at night, and my moon is in Cancer. This means that I can have strong emotions, can hold on to the past too long, have a goofy sense of humor, and dislike superficial relationships. All of this is true for me.

What is your moon sign? Are you solar or lunar dominant (born day or night)? Does it accurately describe your emotional nature?
