In ancient astrology the rising sign (Ascendant) is the chart’s foundation. It is the “hour-marker” that sets the whole sky in motion. Classical authors even used “horoscope” as a synonym for Ascendant, not “Sun sign.” The 1st house that begins at the Ascendant is called the house of life and was treated as the most powerful place in the chart. It describes your body and appearance, vitality, basic motivations, tastes, and mannerisms. In short, it influences how you come across and how your life force presents.
Modern pop astrology underplays the Ascendant because the last century trained readers to start with Sun signs, which are great for newspaper columns but too broad to describe you. By contrast, the rising sign and the Moon are far more personal: the Ascendant shifts roughly every two hours, the Moon every couple of days, so they distinguish you from the millions who share your Sun. Your rising sign shows how you initiate life, the tone people sense on first meeting, and the baseline posture your body and psyche adopt under stress or novelty.
As you read the Ascendant, factor in the placement of the Sun and Moon, which one is dominant (day/night birth), and any nearby planets.
Astrology becomes more accurate the deeper we dig. When we factor in birth time and location and consider how our Ascendant reacts with other influences, we have a much more defined resonant code than the Sun sign alone can provide.
What is your Ascendant? Do you feel it accurately describes your personality?
