In traditional herbal alchemy, certain plants are aligned with the force of Sol (the Sun)—the source of life, clarity, and illumination. Solar herbs uplift the spirit, fortify the body, and awaken our inner radiance.
Many of these herbs were held sacred by ancient civilizations, used in rites, medicines, and daily rituals to draw in solar power. Their energy correlates with the Crown Center, the center associated with inspiration and connection to the Net.
Here are some classic solar herbs and their traditional associations:
Chamomile –
Soft and unassuming, yet powerfully solar. In Ancient Egypt, chamomile was the herb of Ra, the sun god. Priests burned it at sunrise, high noon, and sunset to align with divine cycles. Used to calm the nerves, aid digestion, and bring emotional peace.
St. John’s Wort –
Traditionally harvested on the Summer Solstice, this herb was thought to trap sunlight in its yellow flowers. Used in European folk medicine for banishing spirits, treating melancholy, and anointing sacred thresholds.
Calendula (Marigold) –
Its golden petals were used by the Romans in ceremonies and garlands for Apollo, the sun deity. Applied to wounds, skin infections, and lymphatic swelling. Symbol of resurrection and the sun’s cycle.
Rosemary –
A sacred herb to both Greeks and Romans, linked to memory, fidelity, and protection. Used to crown scholars and soldiers alike. Burned in temples and placed on graves to guide the spirit into the light.
Sunflower –
Revered by Native American tribes for its nourishment and its constant tracking of the sun. Used in rituals for harvest blessings, solar alignment, and visionary strength.
Angelica –
Considered a gift from archangels in medieval Europe. Used in protective potions, sacred incense, and remedies for plague. Brings vitality and alignment with divine will.
Bay Laurel –
The leaves of Apollo’s sacred tree, worn as crowns by oracles, poets, and victors. Used in purification rites, divination, and to summon prophetic insight. Stimulates mental clarity and personal sovereignty.
Cinnamon –
A fiery solar spice from ancient Asia and Egypt, used in temple offerings and embalming rituals. Enhances circulation, sacred fire, and energetic will. Symbol of inner warmth. Can be added to herbal mixtures in spells to speed things up, but use with caution.
Saffron –
The golden thread of Persia, Egypt, and Greece. Used in sacred dyes, royal anointing oils, and to elevate consciousness. Rare and expensive, always associated with the highest light and purity.
Helichrysum (Immortelle) –
Used in Greek funeral rites to symbolize the soul’s eternal flame. Supports emotional healing and regeneration. A bridge between solar memory and timeless spirit.
