Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is an old boundary-and-vision herb with a long record across European folk practice, classical herbalism, and later ceremonial magic. It was used to mark thresholds, repel harmful influence, and sharpen perception, especially in rites involving divination, spirit contact, and protection during liminal work.

In Roman-era sources, wormwood (absinthium) is explicitly used as a fumigant, meaning the plant was burned or steamed so its volatile compounds could be inhaled or applied as vapor.

Wormwood is a natural pest repellant. It was grown along garden edges to repel insects and woven into bedding to deter fleas. It does have proven benefits against fleas, although results vary depending on freshness, concentration, and environment.

Alchemically, wormwood relates to separation, clarification, and controlled volatility. It is bitter, drying, and penetrating, so it “pulls apart” what is mixed, stagnant, or decaying in a system. It acts like a Mercurial “solvent” in the subtle body, cutting through confusion and helping the practitioner separate true signal from contamination, suggestion, or emotional projection. That is why it shows up in banishing, uncrossing, and boundary work that aims to restore clean perception.

Avoid internal use and do not concentrate into oil, as it can be highly toxic. Burn small amounts of dried herb on charcoals in ceremonial blends, and hang dry bundles for warding.
