Cisterns: The Easiest Off-Grid Water You Can Add in the forum Homesteading & Self-Sufficiency 6 days ago
It’s really surprising how much water they can catch. A whole roof, even on a small building, can funnel quite a bit!

Cisterns: The Easiest Off-Grid Water You Can Add in the forum Homesteading & Self-Sufficiency 6 days, 3 hours ago
Cisterns give a home year-round water with no well and no power. They work by partnering with the sky. Rain meets roof, roof guides water to a storage tank, and gravity delivers it when you open a tap. With simple design choices, the system runs quietly through every season while gardens, laundry, and even drinking needs stay supplied.

What are your best tips for raising and protecting farm animals? in the forum Homesteading & Self-Sufficiency 1 month ago
We’re still tucked into the suburbs for now, so my little flock of chickens is as close to a farm as I’ve got, but oh, they’ve changed everything. We have six girls, Rhode Island Reds and Buff Orpingtons, sweet as can be. They give us beautiful eggs and keep the garden beds aerated when I let them free range. But keeping them safe has been a journ…[Read more]

Do you grow your own food? What crops have been most rewarding? in the forum Homesteading & Self-Sufficiency 1 month, 2 weeks ago
I’m up in Washington, and to be honest, I don’t have much of a green thumb. I’ve managed to kill succulents and mint, which I hear is almost impressive.
That said, I’ve found a few staples that seem to forgive my occasional neglect. Kale does great here and basically grows itself once it’s going. Same with chard. I’ve also had decent luck with s…[Read more] -

What are your best tips for raising and protecting farm animals? in the forum Homesteading & Self-Sufficiency 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Farm animals are a vital part of a home agriculture system. Chickens give eggs, goats offer milk, ducks help with pest control, and larger animals contribute manure, meat, or labor. But keeping animals healthy and protected can be a real challenge. Predators, weather, disease, and daily care all require attention and planning.
What animals do you…[Read more]

What food preservation techniques do you use? in the forum Homesteading & Self-Sufficiency 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Preserving food is one of the most practical skills in any self-sufficient lifestyle. Canning is great for sauces, fruits, and jams. Fermenting works well for vegetables and adds probiotics. Drying is easy for herbs and fruits, and cold storage, like root cellars, can keep potatoes, squash, and carrots fresh for months.
Each method has its pros…[Read more]

Have you worked with medicinal herbs or tincture-making? in the forum Homesteading & Self-Sufficiency 1 month, 2 weeks ago
For many on the homesteading path, the garden becomes a medicine chest. From elderberry and calendula to mugwort and garlic, herbs offer gentle, powerful support. Making your own tinctures, salves, or infusions is a way of reclaiming ancestral wisdom and aligning with the intelligence of the field.
Have you experimented with herbal medicine? What…[Read more]

Do you grow your own food? What crops have been most rewarding? in the forum Homesteading & Self-Sufficiency 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Some plants seem to thrive no matter what and grow like weeds with little effort. Others test your patience, refusing to produce or struggling despite care. Over time, most people find a rhythm with their land and climate, discovering which crops feel natural to grow and which ones aren’t worth the energy.
What crops grow easily for you? What…[Read more]

What was your biggest learning curve when starting out? in the forum Homesteading & Self-Sufficiency 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Starting a homesteading or self-sufficient lifestyle can feel like stepping into a whole new reality, one where you’re learning to live with the land instead of over it. Are you urban, suburban, or rural and how have you adapted your setup? in the forum Homesteading & Self-Sufficiency 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Homesteading looks different depending on where you plant your roots. In a rural area, you might have space for livestock, full gardens, or water systems. In the suburbs, maybe it’s raised beds, chickens, and solar rigs. In the city, it could be balcony herbs, container crops, or community space building.
Netism encourages adaptability, working w…[Read more]

rain barrel tip… put a screen over the top, like window screen or mesh, keep the bugs n leaves out. learned that one the hard way lol
also toss in a few copper pennies or a chunk of copper pipe. helps stop algae from buildin up. water stays cleaner, plants don’t mind it either. easy setup, saves a ton when it’s dry out
