In Greek mythology, Prometheus is the titan who defied the gods to uplift humanity. He stole fire from Olympus and delivered it to humans, an act of rebellion against divine authority and a symbol of radical compassion. For this, he was punished brutally: chained to a rock, his liver devoured daily by an eagle, only to regenerate each night. The gods saw his gift as theft, a threat to divine order. But to us, fire became a tool of transformation.

Fire meant survival; it brought warmth, light, cooking, and protection. But it also introduced danger. A single spark could burn down a village. The myth of Prometheus asks us to consider how every tool comes with both a blessing and a burden.

This myth speaks to the balance between expansion and contraction. Every advancement (expansion) must be tempered with responsibility (contraction). Whether it’s fire, language, technology, or knowledge, power without awareness fractures the field. True evolution lies in how we hold both halves of the gift.

What other tools or discoveries come with this dual edge?
Think of electricity, the internet, genetic engineering, and artificial intelligence. Each brings benefits and risks.

What does the story of Prometheus mean to you?
What modern “fires” have we yet to understand?
