In many indigenous traditions, it is said that the very young and the very old are closest to the spirit world. Newborns have only just crossed the threshold into this reality, their senses still tuned to other frequencies. Elders, especially those nearing the end of life, are already beginning their return. Together, they form bookends of spiritual awareness: one entering, one departing.

I’ve noticed this deeply in my own life. I have three children, and with each one, especially in those first few months, I could feel their awe and see the confusion in their eyes, as if trying to make sense of this density we call Earth. It was clear they were still tethered to something beyond. As they grew older, that connection slowly faded, replaced by language, routine, and the expectations of this world.

I’ve also seen this in elders. Those with dementia or Alzheimer’s often move through time in a non-linear way. They are completely present and simultaneously elsewhere, walking between worlds. I once knew a man who spoke daily of his wife coming to take him to dinner, though she had passed long ago. In his heart, she was still just around the corner.

As the body slips in its capabilities, the spirit endures, shifting its focus outward toward the spiritual realms. This doesn’t necessarily mean religion, but memories, spirits who have already passed, and slips of consciousness.

Some wisdom is not learned through years but carried in from the before or drifted back from the beyond.

Have you ever felt that children or elders in your life carried wisdom from another realm?
What did you observe, and how did it affect your understanding of spirit?
